Spring Newsletter 2023: Community Updates

Transportation Updates

Highway 103

There has been some patching completed along Highway 103 in targeted areas during the month of May. My office worked hard along with Public Works staff to get these improvements approved within the 2024-25 capital plan. The current schedule of repaving is:

  • Inbound to Halifax, Exit 3 easterly to the Beechville CNR Overpass 2026-27
  • Inbound to Halifax, Exit 4 easterly to Exit 3 2028-29
  • Outbound from Halifax, Exit 3 easterly to the Beechville CNR Overpass.
Timberlea Village Parkway

Signal light installation work at the Timberlea Village Parkway and Saint Margaret’s Bay Road intersection is set to begin in 2024. The timing will be determined as the various phases of development are completed. I have met with the developer to ask that this be expedited and HRM is working with them on these plans.

Prospect Road

Prospect Road will finally be repaved from Evergreen Place all the way to St Margarets Bay Road this year. As more information becomes available about the start date of construction, I will be sure to share it through my e-newsletter, so stay tuned for updates.

Healthcare Update

Bayers Lake QEII Community Outpatient Centre Milestone Update

I am proud to say that advocating for the approval of the Bayers Lake QEII Outpatient Center and securing its location in Timberlea-Prospect was accomplished back in 2017. Since then, the construction of the facility has been progressing steadily, with several important milestones set to be achieved in the coming months.

The first milestone is the substantial completion of the facility, which is expected to take place in August of this year. This means that the building will be ready for occupancy and the necessary equipment and furniture will be installed.

The second milestone is the occupancy of the facility, which is set to take place in November 2023. At this point, the facility will be fully staffed with healthcare providers and open to the public.

The final milestone is the final completion of the facility, which is expected to take place in the Winter/ Spring of 2024.

I am pleased to report that an additional $33.2 million dollars has been allocated for construction completion. Investing in this infrastructure will bring outpatient services, including cancer care, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation services, primary care, and mental health and addictions services close to home for many, especially for Timberlea-Prospect residents.

Environment Updates

Prospect Region Organization for a Better Environment

Prospect Region Organization for a Better Environment (PROBE) is a community non-profit organization formed to serve the interests of Prospect communities on issues of concern. With the potential of 1,800+ acres of residential and commercial land available for development, it’s important early planning and consideration be given for the new infrastructure needed to support our growing community. By taking a proactive approach to development, we can ensure that our community remains a desirable place to live for generations to come.

Follow PROBE on Facebook to stay up to date on the organization.

Ingram River Wilderness Area

The Ingram River Wilderness area was added to the list of protected areas almost two years ago. I urged for its finalization during budget estimates. Once protected, it will be over twice the size of Blue Mountain Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area.
