As far back as 2022, the Halifax Regional Centre for Education has recommended the construction of a new school to meet the needs of projected growing enrolment in the BLT areas. In my last newsletter I reported that the purchase of lands available off of the Timberlea Parkway, on Maple Grove Avenue, was confirmed shortly after I had met with the Minister and Deputy Minister. I continued with my questioning in the legislature regarding the use of the eleven acres and when we could expect an update to the capital plan.
The multi-year Nova Scotia capital plan does now account for a new school, accommodating pre-primary to grade 8, estimating for about 800 students, and plans for a future Child Care Centre. There are many questions still around the size and scope of this project, the opportunity around the other schools being relieved of pressure, what catchment area the students will all come from, and of course, the construction timeline. I already have asked these questions and hope to have some more information to share with you in the near future.
