Development in Timberlea-Prospect

As a representative for Timberlea-Prospect, I recently sent a letter to Municipal Affairs and Housing to share my concerns about a recent order from the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing that changes housing regulations.

A key site for development has been identified at the entrance to the Prospect communities. I wrote to Municipal Affairs and Housing about my worries regarding new housing regulations. While Nova Scotia faces a housing crisis and needs more homes, it’s important to plan carefully for this growth.

We expect development in our area over the next ten years, but it must be done properly to ensure our communities remain connected and have the necessary infrastructure and funding.

A key site for development has been identified at the entrance to the Prospect communities, which could impact 17 neighbourhoods from Goodwood to West Dover. With current traffic issues on Prospect Road, I’m glad a detailed traffic study is underway to address transportation needs and improve safety.

I believe we should wait for the study’s final report before approving the Halifax Exhibition Centre development and not start any large construction until we secure funding for traffic improvements. We also need to enhance public transit to better serve the Prospect Road Community Centre.

Overall, it’s important to take the right steps for safe and sustainable community growth.

I received this response from the Senior Executive Director of Housing:

“Thank you for your letter dated August 26, 2024, about the proposed re-development of the Halifax Exhibition Centre. This site has not been designated a Special Planning Area at this time. However, all Special Planning Areas are still subject to the necessary studies, as well as all applicable permitting, fees, and regulatory requirements.

Your concerns regarding capital costs, construction starts, and public transportation are under municipal jurisdiction and these issues will be addressed through the planning application process.”
