The Halifax Regional Municipality has identified the Halifax Exhibition Centre lands as Opportunity Sites to be developed as a mixed-use neighbourhood with a range of housing and dwelling unit types.
Their current proposal includes:
- approximately 5,867 residential units, including 28 apartment buildings ranging from 6 to 24 storeys, and 20 townhouses and stacked townhouses (146 individual units);
- supporting commercial uses, including the existing gas bar;
demolishing the existing Halifax Exhibition Centre building and the go-kart track; - expansion of central water and wastewater services (HEC is already serviced for the existing use – the proposal includes upgrading services to support a mixed-use development); and
- new public roads and parkland.
The planning process will consider the appropriate range of housing types and land uses, development density, lands suitable for development to mitigate environmental impacts, and infrastructure upgrades needed to support mixed-use development on the site. Fathom Studios, on behalf of the landowner BANC Group, submitted a proposal for redeveloping the HEC lands.
Upcoming Public Engagement Opportunities
The Public Engagement Session will take place on Wednesday, September 11, at the Halifax Exhibition Centre, 200 Prospect Road, Beechville, in Prospect Rooms 1 & 2.
There will be two sessions: the first from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and the second from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Municipal planning staff will begin each session with a brief presentation about the planning process.
Afterward, attendees will be invited to participate in smaller breakout discussions, where they can ask questions and provide feedback. Additionally, there will be display boards featuring engagement activities.
You are welcome to attend the session of your choice—no registration is required, and both sessions will offer the same content.
